Why Right Now is the Best Time to Start Selling on Walmart

Walmart's online marketplace has been making headlines recently, and for good reason- it's rapidly catching up to Amazon. As an Amazon seller, now is the perfect time to start offering your product on Walmart. Here are 5 reasons that make an excellent case for the upcoming marketplace:

1. You can compete better and faster on Walmart than on Amazon.

While Walmart is second only to Amazon in the e-commerce world, Amazon’s e-commerce business is still dramatically bigger than Walmart’s, and for sellers, that’s a beautiful thing. Competing in a smaller marketplace gives those selling on Walmart a huge advantage. Walmart.com has 120 million unique visitors and only 10,000 sellers. Read that again and compare it to the 9 million sellers that are currently on Amazon. This means one thing- massive opportunity for those who are selling on Walmart right now. Less competition equals higher sales.

It's worth noting that the low number of sellers is in part due to the fact that unlike Amazon, Walmart will not grant a seller’s account to just anyone. They’re actually pretty selective and only want established brands selling quality products, who already have a positive track record of online sales. For you, this eliminates competing with scammers commonly seen selling on Amazon.

2. Walmart is serious about winning a major share of the e-commerce market.

We’ve seen explosive growth from Walmart’s online marketplace during the pandemic, as they’ve aggressively developed their e-commerce business. In February 2020, Walmart introduced their answer to Amazon’s FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon): Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS).

Walmart also introduced W+ in 2020, a membership program that provides unlimited free deliveries along with other perks for users.

As time goes on, we can expect Walmart to continue its rapid expansion into e-commerce.

3. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to sell on Amazon, even for established sellers.

As Amazon continues to answer lawsuits with increased third-party seller restrictions, sellers have been falsely flagged for multiple issues, and some have even been suspended due to Amazon’s bots.

Amazon sellers have also recently faced major reductions in FBA storage limitations, which has negatively impacted business for affected sellers.

For many, selling on Walmart has been able to fill the gap where Amazon has adversely impacted their business in recent months.

4. Walmart offers sellers more control over returns and customer service.

One of Walmart’s best seller benefits is the opportunity to set your own shopping policies. Amazon’s policies usually always favor the buyer, and their no-questions-asked returns usually leave the seller footing the bill.

However, Walmart sets minimum requirements on return policies, such as a 30-day return window, and customers have the option to return via a physical Walmart location.

5. Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket - diversifying

The old saying holds true- especially in e-commerce during unprecedented times. The easiest way to grow your e-commerce business is through diversification of your sales channels. Diversification is essential for online businesses to keep pace with changing market and buyer needs.
